| Product Description Instead of throwing away old, dull bits, give them a checkup with the Drill Doctor and extend their life. Although drill-bit sharpening systems often fail to live up to our expectations, we're here to bear witness for the truth of the Drill Doctor's claims: it really does sharpen old bits in just a couple of minutes. The 750SP (also known as the Professional) works on conventional, split-point, and masonry bits from 3/32 to 3/4 inches in size. If you don't plan on sharpening anything larger than 1/2-inch bits, we recommend getting the 500SP instead; it's basically the same machine, minus the cost of the 3/4-inch chuck that comes with this model. Both models--the 500SP and the Professional 750SP--allow you to choose between a 118- and 135-degree sharpening angle. Operation is fairly simple, but to make sure no one has trouble figuring it out, the Drill Doctor comes with a how-to video. Anyone who frequently wears down drill bits is going to appreciate the savings this handy machine can offer. Using sharp bits instead of dull ones also increases the life of your drill, because sharper bits require less work to make the same hole. We only wish we'd found the Drill Doctor sooner. --Brian Trinen |
| What Some Customers Thought
Why did I wait so long to buy this? I needed a bench grinder, bought a Delta GR450. For tools and drills. Awful! Heavy vibrations, tool rests hit wheels. Brought it back a day later. (Nice Post/Western tool store nearby gave me my money back.) ^M I knew research would be required for a grinder so I bought, on impulse, the DD750 Drill Bit Sharpener. Wow! With my failing eyesight -- I'm 63 -- it's much easier than a bench grinder. ^M For 33 years I did drills by hand on the bench grinder. I do like this tool.^M Missed 5-stars because of difficulty with short bits, e.g., sharpened broken bits. A simple rubber tube to extend the bit shank out of the chuck might solve the problem.^M Still have to field sharpen bits with an electric drill 4" wheel from time-to-time.^M One last note: I bought it retail in CA $139.99+tax=$151.89.^M So much for impulse shopping. Next time I'll check the web first.
better with bigger bits This product works well with bits 1/4" and up. ^M ^M Whereas the basic design of this product is good - there is an issue when trying to sharpen smaller bits. The mechanism used to align the bit before sharpening does not work well with small bits. ^M Making good split tips is more difficult and would be improved with a better alignment mechanism.^M ^M I bought mine from Amazon a month ago for $125.00.^M So what I had considered a reasonable price is now a whole lot better.^M ^M The machine takes a bit (ha- ha) of getting used to; for the most part it works quite well.^M ^M When drilling metals it is always a good idea to apply oil to the contact surface and drill at slow speed. If you are able to keep your bits cool (that's what the oil does) they last a long time.^M ^M More common is to snap off a small bit that you would like to then resharpen. ^M As this machine doesn't do small bits well - you still end up having to replace them.^M ^M caslo
Unbelievable It took me about 2-3 bits to get the procedure down. In about an hour I had sharpened all my twist bits and three split points. Want to keep your bits sharp? Buy one. |
