Product Description

You'll get great results with this Black & Decker heavy-duty Edge Hog landscape edger, one of the easiest-to-use pieces of equipment we've come across. You'll be thrilled with how quickly you can get to work, as assembly takes only a few minutes. This is an electric model, so you'll need an extension cord and an electric outlet handy, but you won't have to deal with gas or oil. And it's so quiet you can edge at any time of day--even early Saturday mornings--without worrying about waking up the neighbors.

We found the Edge Hog has plenty of power in its 2-1/4-horsepower motor for both edging and trenching, and it's easy to switch from one to the other by simply raising or lowering the edge guide. The edger weighs only 12 pounds, which allows for easy transportation and great maneuverability around curved paths, but makes it more difficult to maintain a straight line when you're tackling a lawn that hasn't been edged in a while. If you're digging out quite a bit of dirt along with the edge you're creating, it takes some effort to keep the unit stable.

Undoing a screw toward the front of the edger and raising or lowering its leading wheel easily adjusts the depth of the edge groove you're making along with your edge. The unit can also be adjusted to fit the height of the user more comfortably by changing the angle on the guide handle. The blade requires only a pull of the trigger to start instantly and, unlike many gas models, stops as soon as the trigger is released---an important safety feature.

What Some Customers Thought

GO FOR IT.

This has so many features over a gas edger that it makes dealing with the cord worth while for any lot that is one acre or less. It easily cuts a clean line with little effort and is easy to manage. The adjustments and guide work exactly like they should. I couldn't talk myself into a gas edger no mater how hard I tried.^M
I am not a B&D fan as I prefer higher end tools. I trust B&D just a little more than W. So, I read the negative feedback with great interest. Thankfully I followed Ron Bierman's advice and bought locally. The unit was DOA as they forgot to put the spring into the height adjustment to hold it in place. Took it back & exchanged it for another and it only cost me 45 minutes. Now, if I get 25 years out of this one like I did the last B&D edger I had, I'll be happy. It seems to be about the best value around.

Does what string trimmers can't do

I used to own a Ryobi gas-powered string trimmer. When I was able to start it, it could trim around beds and even sort of edge walks. When I couldn't start it anymore, I bought the Edge Hog a couple of years ago. The electric start is far more reliable than a gas engine. While the Edge Hog can't trim next to trees or the house, of course, it clears a straight line next to walks with ease and can trench a line around garden beds. It does this much faster than a string trimmer and the result is much cleaner.^M
^M
I've used the Edge Hog a few times when the grass has grown over the walk so much that the edger has to chew through half an inch or more of thatch, but it never balked. During a job like that you do have to open it up and clean around the blade a few times (UNPLUG it first), but it only takes a moment. I also think it's easier to clean up after the edger than a string trimmer and you don't have to worry as much about flying debris.^M
^M
When edging a walk, it can take a bit of care to ensure that the blade doesn't strike the concrete; I wish the guide was a bit larger to make that easier, but after a little practice you get the hang of it.^M
^M
You may only need this edger once or twice a year, but it takes the drudgery out of what used to be a dreaded chore.

Edges Like Cutting Butter

The Black @ Decker Edger edges effortlessly... it's almost like cutting butter. One neighbor has one and six different neighbors have edged their yards with it. This is a new neighborhood... We are all in the process of purchasing our own!^M
The only reason that I didn't rate it 5 stars is that you have to clean some dirt from the blade surround when finished.
